About 25% of what’s thrown away into the trash includes organic materials like food, coffee grounds, paper towels, napkins and certified compostable plastic. All that waste can be recycled into an organic fertilizer rather than going into a landfill. However, it requires YOU to stop the cycle by placing those items into a separate container and disposing of it properly.

How to get started

You place food scraps and other organic materials into a separate, certified compostable bag in your home.

1. You put the bag of organic waste into the bin provided by your City of Minneapolis trash hauler. Sign up for free to get an organics recycling bin: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/resident-services/garbage-recycling-cleanup/organics-recycling/

You bring the bag of organic materials to one of Minneapolis’ organics drop off sites such as the one at Bryant Square Park (3101 Bryant Ave. S.). * Only properties with 1-4 dwelling units hav access to at home organics pick up provided by the City of Minneapolis. Residents in buildings with 5 or more units may or may not receive organics recycling at their home depending upon the building’s trash hauler. If not, please consider taking organic waste to one of the drop off sites.

what organic materials are accepted for recycling?

• All food including fruits, vegetables, meat, bones, dairy products, egg shells, pasta, bread and nuts.

• Food soiled paper including pizza boxes, napkins, paper towels, facial tissues and paper egg cartons.

• Certified compostable plastic cups, bowls, utensils and containers that include the term “compostable” or the “BPI” logo.

• Other compostable household items like coffee grounds/ filters, popsicle sticks, wooden chopsticks, toothpicks, flowers and house plants

Which items to keep out of the organics recycling?

• Glass

• Plastics including food stickers, utensils, and styrofoam ™.

• Plastic-coated paper containers including coffee and soda cups

• Fast food wrappers and condiment packets

• Uncertified plastic “to-go” containers and containers labeled “biodegradable”

• Grease or oil

• Diapers, sanitary products and cleaning wipes

HOw do I Store Organic Waste in my home?

• Consider using a coffee can, ice cream pale or container made for organics recycling.
